Reuse, recycle
We are always looking for artisans who refashion thrown-away
material into new and beautiful objects — jewelry
made from discarded soda cans, bowls and mobiles that Kenyan
artisans fashion from wire and scrap tin. Some
recent additions: the collection of tumblers that Green
Glass makes from old wine bottles, and original
clothing designs by Super Lucky Cat, made
from surplus t-shirts. |
We're sweatshop-free
Sweatshops
are workplaces which do not meet minimal labor standards with
regard to pay, benefits, and work conditions. They are particularly
rampant in the garment industry, in developing countries,
and in the US, where the workforce is predominantly immigrant
women. Homebody
has a wide selection of casual knitwear from American
Apparel, which has set an industry standard for quality
and labor standards. And we pick our t-shirts not only for
the message on the front, but for the union label inside.

Resources for change
Our mission is not simply to provide an ethical marketplace,
but to educate and raise awareness. We therefore offer a
range of activist materials:
- A selection of hard-to-find and innovative small-press
books
- T-shirts with progressive messages instead of corporate
logos
- Beautifully designed posters with a point.

Fair-trade gifts and jewelry
Fair Trade is a partnership, based on dialogue, transparency
and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade.
It contributes to sustainable development by offering better
trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized
producers, especially in developing nations.
We research and seek out a range of fair-trade suppliers,
from Latin America, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, for
quality, style, and their record for upholding fair trade
standards. |
